The Berkshire Under 14 team continued the county's run of good second places this season in a four county jamboree at the Surrey cricket centre in Guildford. The host county's consistency on the lower boards meant that they were able to post the winning total, but Berkshire were pleased to have driven U14 NYCA top county Sussex into third place.
The event had a jamboree format, which brought several interesting turns in a lengthy pitched battle. The two hour sessions were testing but decisive, with only one draw over the two rounds, and that in a tense queen ending where Felix Ynojosa skilfully spun a draw by repetition out of a rough position a pawn down. Other long first round games included David Andrews cutting an important late point off Sussex to edge the team into second place at the tea interval with 6.5 points.
With a half point lead, few slips could be afforded in the final round, and the early results saw us build a lead and even begin to chase Surrey. The next few results began to swing against us, but the contest took a decisive turn when Ben Vandersluis pulled back a point, seeing his opponent run out of time. The contest over, Surrey were declared winners. Berkshire followed on in a close run, but well deserved, second place.
