In the first under 9 county match of 2007/8, Berkshire’s team came out joint 2nd in a match against 3 other local rivals, with the reserve team in a clear first place. In the head to head matches, we were narrowly beaten by Sussex in the first round, but then lost emphatically to run-away event winners, Buckinghamshire. In the final round we comprehensively defeated Hampshire, by 8½ points to 3½. This gave us a final overall total on the day of 17½ points from 36 - though joint second place was only secured in the very last game to finish in the whole event when Matthew Wadsworth, with just 3 minutes left on his clock, checkmated his Hampshire opponent. Just as vital was Joshua Hankins' cunning final round win despite being a whole piece down in the endgame!
In the reserve competition we scored an excellent 7 points from a possible 9, beating all 3 of the other teams in the respective matches.
Congratulations to the whole team, of whom 11 players from 15 were making their Berkshire county debuts; and particularly to those scoring 100%, namely Thomas Robinson and Kieran Grey. Many thanks to the many Berkshire parents who helped with setting up, running the refreshments stall and/or clearing up afterwards. Thanks also to our excellent hosts at St Piran's School, Maidenhead.
We look forward to the next match, against Wiltshire on January 20th!
