With many of the big guns away playing at the South of England Championships at Yateley Manor, this tournament looked to be more open than usual, and so it proved. There was a good entry, with 15 players from the host school, 6 from Caversham and 5 further schools represented. Almost half the number were new to Berkshire Junior chess, and they all seemed to enjoy the afternoon, with plenty of energetic activity outside (although not on the football pitch) as well as careful thought in the tournament room.
The rate of play was quite quick in the first few rounds, allowing time for 7 games in total. The 4 top-graded players won their opening three games, and the top 2 won in round 4, leaving the decisive game to be between Maximillian Papachristos (1093) and Harvey Jensen (830). Making light of the gap in grades, Harvey scored a convincing win to put himself in poll position.
Going into the final round, a 3 way tie for first was still possible, but initial talk of a "grandmaster draw" between Harvey and Jonathan Smith (which would have ensured the trophy for Harvey and outright third for Jonno), was abandoned in favour of a competitive game. The game and a first SAE trophy were won by Harvey. There were four players in equal third with an excellent 5 points, including the winner of the minor trophy for best result for a player graded under 500: Keiran Greenwood.
