Junior 4NCL Saturday, January 12
Geoff Holland writes:

We had a team of Berkshire players in the junior NCL competition on 12th/13th January at Wokefield Park. They called themselves The Pluto Team and comprised Felix Ynojosa, Angelica Ynojosa (his sister), James Holland and William Foo. Just four teams were entered, the small turnout possibly due to the requirement that the team manager had to hold enhanced CRB clearance - something which fortunately James's mum has. Apart from these four players there was one other Berkshire player in the competition, Patrick Butler in the Winchester College team. All four teams were of a high standard.

The competition is based on an age handicap system. For instance in the last round we faced a young team "The French Fries" and in order to win the round we had to defeat them 3-1. The handicap system worked to our advantage playing the other older teams though. The Plutos won the day winning all three rounds. Individual scores out of three were Felix 3, Angelica 1, James 2½ and William ½.

Before and after the competition the kids had some coaching, culminating in a 5 minute match between Felix and Lorin d'Costa which was exciting, Lauren won with some relief after a struggle.

The competition has its second and final stage on 3rd and 4th May.
