St. Michael's SAE and UKCC Qualifier Saturday, March 29
Mark Vandersluis writes:

34 entrants from 18 different schools competed across the two events held simultaneously on a very wet afternoon at St. Michael's Primary School in Sandhurst. With the normal SAE consisting of 6 rounds and the UK Chess Challenge requiring 7 rounds, the logistics were quite challenging for the organisers, but both events ran very smoothly.

In the SAE, top place went to Tom Vandersluis from the host school, unbeaten on the day with a fine 5½/6 and winning his first Berkshire Saturday Afternoon Event Major trophy. Maybe Home advantage works in chess as well as football! Maximillian Papachristos continued his fine form in 2nd place with 5/6, and Robert Starley came 3rd with 4½/6.

The Minor trophy for the best result for a player graded under 500 was won by Charles Nadeau in a playoff with James Widman, after both players tied in 4th= on 4/6.

In the penultimate BJCA UK Chess Challenge Qualifier event, 12 qualified for the May Megafinal, with James Holland and Roy Zhang tying in 1st place. Next week's UKCC event at Sonning Common will be the last opportunity in the county for qualification to the Megafinal.
