UK Chess Challenge Berkshire Megafinal Monday, May 05

A record entry of 230 players in 10 sections took part in the season's largest junior chess event in Berkshire. Much of the increase was due to the much larger number of girls who entered (54), enabling us to run three separate girls sections. The new venue of St. Mary's, Ascot proved very successful, with plenty of space in the main hall for parents anxiously waiting for their childrens' results.

The chess tournament ran very well, keeping to schedule (after the controlled chaos that is always round 1) and producing its fair share of unexpected results and possible new stars of the future.

With some early summer-ish weather, the children took full advantage of the large grounds to burn off any built-up steam arising from the tense games of chess, especially towards the end as the players chased the magical 4 points needed to qualify for the Southern Region GigaFinal. Many congratulations to those who did and best of luck in what will be an even tougher event.
