The 2008 Terafinal returned to its Sheffield home - in 2007 flooding meant it was held in Leamington Spa instead - and 6 intrepid Berkshire players plus their parents made the journey up the M1 to try their luck.

Jonathan Matthews and Louise Head were competing at the event for the first time and acquitted themselves very well in the Challengers sections. It is worth noting that the Challengers competitions are just as strong as the main Terafinal event itself - indeed the highest graded player (a fomer Terafinal 'Strat') at the whole weekend was competing in Jonathan's section. James Holland was also in the Challengers section, returning to the event for the first time since 2004. He played really well, winning 3 games and drawing 2, and returned home a deserved prize-winner

In the main Terafinal, Rachel Davey was competing at this event for the first time, and in round 2 notched up a fantastic win against the highly-rated England player Anna Wang. William Foo also had a good competition, winning two and drawing one game. In the first round, Matthew Wadsworth found himself on one of the top boards paired against the 3rd seed, hence with the doubtful privilege of having his defeat being analysed by in public by a grandmaster. After a bad error in the second round, Matthew (admittedly helped by one or two sympathetic pairings) went on to win all his remaining 4 games to finish in an excellent 8th= and sharing both the under 9 and under 11 titles.

P.S. While all this was going on, Berkshire's SAE supremo Peter Davey was showing he knows a thing or two about chess boards by winning a prize in the so-called 'Relax with Chess' supporting event. (Author's note: Speaking personally, I didn't find it very relaxing, especially when making a silly mistake to lose a game I should have won....).
