SAE - Caversham Primary Saturday, October 18

For the last two seasons, the Caversham SAE has taken place over half term, but has still attracted roughly 30 entrants. With a slightly earlier date, it was hoped that numbers would rise, but in the end there were slightly fewer players (29). But with 18 Caversham pupils, 7 newcomers, 7 different schools represented and no-one graded over 1000, the scene was set for a close-fought contest. There were plenty of games that went against form, and the newcomers did well, all of them scoring at least a point "over the board".

The first decisive game arrived as early as round 3, where third seed Joshua Hankins defeated fellow Caversham pupil Jonathan Smith. The next crunch game was in round 5, when Joshua met the undefeated top seeded Ben Ward. A rather quick game, which went again to Joshua, who thus became the first Caversham player to win their local event.

The minor trophy came down to a blitz game between local newcomer Conrad Bullows Weeks and James Kinsler-Lubienski. It was won by James after some early major gains in materiel.
