Under 9, Under 11 and Under 14 Team matches v. Wiltshire Sunday, January 25

Mark Vandersluis (Under 11 team manager) writes:

On a wet day at The Downs School in Compton, the U11s continued their excellent start to the season with a good win against Wiltshire. The original team of 16 changed to 15 as William Foo was moved up to the U14s to balance team numbers at U14 and U11 levels. The first round gave us a brilliant 14-1 result, but in chess anything can happen, and sure enough, Wiltshire fought back strongly in Round 2 where we won by the closer margin of 9-6. We consolidated our position in Round 3 with a 10-5 score to finish the day at 33-12. On the day, six players scored a perfect 3/3: Matthew Wadsworth, Louise Head, Alfred Wong, Nabeel Hussain, Peter Robinson and Miles Deans. Interestingly, not a single match resulted in a draw. There are a few learning points from the match: I witnessed a number of spectacular blunders which resulted in some of our players snatching defeat from the jaws of victory (rather than the other way round!). And the team manager has run out of different ways of asking the team to slow down and take more time before playing a move! If anyone has any suggestions here, answers on a postcard please...

Both Berks and Wilts team managers were pleased to note the positive and sporting atmosphere in which the whole match was conducted - the players were a credit to their counties.

The U11 team will be back in action in 3 weeks' time with their last friendly before the EPSCA Zonal in March.

Nigel Dennis, Under 14 team manager for the day, writes:

With their board 1 player unwell on the day, and William Foo making a last minute replacement, the under 14 team were unable to gain a huge advantage over Wiltshire in the first round, unlike the under 11 team. In round 1 Berkshire all had White, and Wiltshire were winners 6½ - 5½. There was much to do in the second round all playing Black. With William Foo, Charlie Bucknell and Reece Rogers winning both their games, Berkshire just moved ahead to win the round 7-5, and the match 12½ - 11½. Edmund Lote and Maximillian Papachristos were the last two to finish. In Edmund's game both sides promoted a pawn to give an ending with both players having two Queens. Maximillian's game came down to both sides having a Knight and one pawn. Both games ended in draws with only two Kings remaining.
