On a cold and foggy day, a Berkshire chess team traveled to Birmingham for the NYCA under 15 competition. The team was actually an under 14 team which also included two under 11 players!
It may have been cold, but the fire was still burning in the Berkshire team right to the end of the day.
A fantastic first round, with losses to only the top two teams, saw Berkshire in fifth place. An equally strong second round, another eight points, and we were joint third...
The third round was tough. Everyone else appeared to have woken up! Berkshire slipped to sixth place, but we were still within one point of the fourth placed team.
The final round was right back up there with our first two rounds. With other teams slipping back, Berkshire ended up in joint fourth place.
There were no 100% players for Berkshire. However, two players remained unbeaten on the day - George Tunstall and Ben Vandersluis. Well done to everyone. An absolutely brilliant result for a young team that never gave up.
