Under 18 Team event: Berks, Surrey, Sussex
Saturday, September 12
Keith Tunstall writes:
A new season, with new challenges. The first outing was certainly a tough challenge for the under 18 team. We travelled to Wilson's school in Surrey for this three county, two round, jamboree style match with Surrey and Sussex. The games were keenly fought throughout the team in both rounds. Although it was always going to be an uphill battle as both the Sussex and Surrey teams outgraded us by an average of 40 and 60 grading points respectively. This was reflected in the first round scores with Sussex (7), half a point ahead of Surrey (6½) and Berkshire with a creditable 4½. Round two was as tough as the first, with just four wins to cheer for Berkshire. Surrey took two more points than Sussex to come out top on the day. Overall the Berkshire team played over 32 hours of chess on the day, with several matches that went close to the 2h 10m distance. Well played to Ben Vandersluis and Charlie Bucknell who were unbeaten on the day and especially to Ryan Chen who was the only Berkshire player to have a 100% record. Thanks to everyone who braved the roads, traffic was heavy on some routes, to get the team to the venue and to the players for maintaining our usual team spirit. |
