Chiltern League U125 Match Sunday, March 13
Ivor Kelly writes:

It gives me great pleasure to report to you that the overall result of our match today against Oxfordshire was a win for Berkshire by the margin of 8½ - 3½ points.

Oxfordshire put out a very strong side, and indeed were winners of this U125 competition last year. Today, there were many close games, a number lasting almost the full three hours.

SO, WELL DONE EVERYONE. A REALLY EXCELLENT RESULT.

Particularly pleasing were the results of every one of our Junior contingent, who played their socks off against adults with strong chess ratings. Lucy Head must share in this limelight for her perseverance in putting together such a strong team and delivering such a wonderful group of young chess players. There are many stars of the future here, methinks.

Among the results on the Adult front were wins for Christine, David S and David H. This fine trio demolished their opposition in short time and were responsible for Berks opening up a healthy lead early in the overall match. Ivan's game went the distance and was well fought - this one could have gone either way right up to the end.

All this now means that Berks will be one of the two teams to play off for the U125 Trophy, in a match to be played at Wellington College in approximately two weeks time (Saturday 26 March, 2 pm start). It looks like our opponents on that day will be Hampshire, whom we beat earlier in the season. That said, Joe French's team will be keen to renew battle so we'll need to play really well once again to have a fighting chance of lifting the silverware.
