The Berkshire U9s did really well at the first inter-county tournament of the season on 7th January at Polehampton School. We traditionally play the tournament against Buckinghamshire, Sussex and Hampshire, but, this year, Wey Valley [Surrey] also joined the throng.
In the 12-board competition Berkshire was joint second with Wey Valley [Sussex 27½, Berkshire 20½, Wey Valley 20½, Hampshire 14, Buckinghamshire 7½]. To put this in perspective, Sussex were last year’s gold medal winners in the 19-county Final, and Wey Valley were the silver medallists – a fantastic performance. Of note, Peter Isaksen, Thomas Bruce, Harry Grayson, Jake Bains-Gillespie and James Beckinsale were all unbeaten on the day.
In the reserves tournament we also did really well - considering most of the participants were from Sussex! The first round started well with Aylin Gurleyen deploying an ingenious plan to overcome a material deficit to produce a drawn endgame against her Sussex opponent. At the end of the contest Siddarth Ramaraju was second in the tournament on 2½/3 (unlucky not to achieve a perfect score by letting his first opponent off the hook with a stalemate), and Alan Gleeson managed to beat 2 Sussex players only losing to the winner of the tournament from Wey Valley.
We look forward to the next friendly on 4th February against Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Barnet (bronze medal winners in the Final last year).
Congratulations to all players – and thanks to the parents that got them to the venue.
