The U9 team did Berkshire proud by winning Bronze medals at the inter-county Zonal competition staged at Kempshott School, Hants on 10th March 2012. This equalled the best ever performance of a Berkshire U9 team at the Zonal competition (since Wey Valley and Sussex joined Berkshire’s Zone).

The day started inauspiciously when a player pulled out through illness the night before, and we found out that this year two counties present (also including Birmingham, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, Sussex, Wey Valley and Wiltshire) would be eliminated before the Final.

After a team talk (emphasising the use of the extra time on the clocks to avoid particular common errors) the team had a storming start taking 8/12 - or perhaps it was the incentive of sweets! We came off our sugar high in round 2 scoring 4.5/12, but consolidated in Round 3 with 5/12 being enough to take third place after Sussex and Wey Valley.

Every single player played their part in this great result. Of note, Siddarth Ramaraju, Tom Breedon, Aylin Gurleyen, Daniel Dunbar and Harvey Zhang were all unbeaten on the day (with Siddarth, Aylin and Harvey taking points off Sussex and Wey Valley).

With training sessions planned for 24th March and 21st April we hope the momentum will be maintained all the way to the Final in Northampton on 28th April.

Congratulations again to all the players – and thanks to the parents that got them to the venue.
