The Abbey’s U19 chess team is celebrating a superb debut appearance at the National Girls' Schools U19 Chess Championships with the team unbeaten throughout the two days of competition finishing in second place.
The Abbey came third in the Southern Region Semi-Final, and they headed to St Catherine’s School in Bramley for the final knowing that they faced tough opposition from the three best teams in the northern region as well as the other two southern region teams. The competition began well with a victory over the winners of the northern semi-final, RGS Newcastle, and consistently strong performances from all three girls meant that they finished only half a point behind the eventual winners, Nonsuch Grammar school. Louise Head, who was unbeaten all weekend, battled well to draw her match with the leading Nonsuch Grammar player, who is the Joint British Women's champion and a fellow international player.
A big well done also to Helen Archer-Lock on 2nd board who won 4 out of her 5 games. Shruthi Barathan also played well and had a key win against the team who came 2nd in the Southern Semi-finals scoring valuable points.
