The first Saturday tournament of the new year attracted an excellent turnout of over 30 players, and sections were again divided by grade. This approach certainly led to some tough matches right from round 1, but it was round 3 that proved decisive. Rachel Davey had drawn with the Whiteknights tournament winner Zach Salvini before Christmas, but this time she took the full point. Rachel went on to win her next two matches as well to pick up her first SAE trophy with a perfect 5 / 5 score.
Meanwhile, Zach, and several other top-graded players, were ambushed by those keen to get the new year off to a flying start. The large swings in grade show that there was no shortage of upsets on the day.
The Challenger's section was also of a high standard, with most entrants already experienced in these tournaments. There were only a handful of "over in less than 2 minutes" matches, and many games looked very close all the way through. In the end, there was yet another new winner for this season: Kazuka Ohashi, who also scored 5 / 5.
