Under 11 Team event
Sunday, February 15

An exciting afternoon of chess took place at Claires Court on Sunday February 15th. Yes, Barnet are known to be strong this year, but the fight for second place was where the action was. Berkshire held the best-of-the-rest position for most of the afternoon, but sadly, we faded at the last, and Oxfordshire just snuck ahead in the final few games, dropping Berkshire into 3rd place.
Of note were the superb unbeaten performances by Nicholas Vallis, Saatvika Mahesh, and Henry Munn. Saatvika showed great depth especially in her second game when down in the mid-game, but persevered to recover with a wonderful win.
Also performing well against some tough opponents were Gurveen Kapoor with some brilliant positional play, Aditya Singh and Mia Harris, each achieving 2 wins. Great to watch was Mia, who with her direct no-nonsense aggressive approach, we’re going to call “Bulldozer” in future!
The long afternoon rewarded those that stayed focused and concentrated: Euan Miles had the stamina to ground-down his opponents scoring points from behind, Jake Bains-Gillespie played some inspirational recovery moves to steal a draw off Barnet’s board#1, and both Sam Rollett and Ciara Jolliffe, when they didn’t rush, built-up from a strong position wining end-games – well done!
With the two practice competitions for this season now completed, the next event is the real-thing: the U11 Zone on the 21st March, with Sussex hosting. Keep practicing…
