The 2015 BJCA chess season kicked off with an SAE at Polehampton Junior School in Twyford. Glorious sunshine shone down on the 28 players, with plenty of the old guard, as well as a good sprinkling of new faces, turning out for battle.
In the end it went to form with Gurveen Kapoor claiming the top honours and the Major Trophy with a clean sweep 6 out of 6. Reza Batley was second with 5, and Alex Beech third with an excellent 4½, playing above his grade. Boris Stoyanov claimed the Minor Trophy (best performance with a Berkshire grade under 600) with a very commendable 4 points.
Overall, there was plenty of good chess and the grit and determination shown by all the players, and particularly those at the lower end of the results table, was a delight to see, and bodes well for the County matches during the coming season.
Don’t forget the Berkshire Junior Championships on 17th October, and the U9 and U11 Trials in November – see the calendar for more details of these and other upcoming events. In the meantime keep practising!
