U12/U13/U14 Team Report - 2014 – 2015 Season Thursday, October 22
Tanya Beckinsale (U12/U13/U14 Team Manager) writes:

The U12/U13/U14 squad have played in a number of events this year, but sadly not as many as we have tried to recruit for!

Taking the events individually;

NYCA U14 Championship, Northampton -  28th Sept 2014

We entered a young U14 team in this strong national event, which had an impressive entry from most of the top counties in the country.  Our top U14s were playing for the U18 team, and the majority of our team were U12 or under.  However, Berkshire played with maturity and commitment, and were often amongst the last to finish their games.  We ended the day 5th out of 10 teams, a very creditable result in this field, and which promised well for the season.  A full report was published by Chris Archer-Lock on the BJCA website.

NYCA U12, Telford - 8th Nov 2014 – Not Attended

The location defeated us once again this year! We are hoping there might be a more accessible/central venue for this event next year – in which case we will hope to take part.

U14 Jamboree, Guildford - 8th March 2015

Our top U14 players were needed to play in the U18 Open again at this event, leaving our U14 Open team, with an average age of 11, facing a ‘David versus Many Goliaths’ challenge!  Our team were out-graded by between 25 & 50 on all boards, and our Board 1 was graded below the bottom boards of almost every other team!  Nevertheless, the team rose to the challenge, held their nerve, and fought hard in all their games. Every one of our team scored, against extremely strong players – a truly fantastic achievement!  It wasn’t a podium finish, with our team finishing 6th out of 7. However, on paper, we should not have scored at all!  A full report was once again published with the assistance of Chris Archer-Lock on the BJCA website.

ECF U13 Country Championship, Grantham – 21st June 2015

We have an U13 Open team entered into this competition, but unfortunately had to withdraw, due to a late change in player availability. Again we hope to enter next year.

SCCU U14/U130 Tournament – November - June

We played in the South West zone of this tournament, in competition with Oxon, Bucks, Hants, and potentially Wilts through the season.  Our team got off to a flying start in November with a 20.5: 3.5 victory over Bucks.  With Hants failing to raise a team for their match against us, and Wilts declining entry, we then faced Oxon (the overall Southern Counties winners for the last 2 years), who had also beaten Bucks convincingly.  Our team played superbly, scored an impressive 14.5:9.5 victory over a strong Oxon side, and as a result won the South West Zone!

We played the winners of the South East Zone, in the Final for the overall Southern Counties title on 27th June, which we hosted at St Piran’s, Maidenhead, and sadly lost 7.5 – 16.5 to a very strong Middlesex team. We actually drew the match on the top 6 boards, but Middx had great depth in their team, and were very tough opponents on the bottom 6 boards.

Although we didn’t win the overall Final, huge congratulations are due to the players, as they all played brilliantly throughout the season to get there, and this is the 1st time Berkshire have reached the final of this competition since it’s inception in this grade level in 2010.  Particular mention to following players, who were undefeated over the whole season:

Nikhil Kadambadi: 5½/6
Nicholas Vallis: 5½/6
Laura Davidson: 3½/4
Helen Archer-Lock: 1/2
Krystal Fernandes: 2/2
James Beckinsale: 4/4

Next Season!

There are a significant number of events in this age category, and BJCA are committed to offering as many playing opportunities as possible to the children. To help with this, I am delighted that Sian Thornley and Tracey Vallis have agreed to share this role with me for the 2015-2016 season.

We hope to get the event dates for the year published as early as possible in the season, so stand by to mark your diaries to represent your county again next year!

We are lucky to have a talented group of players in this age group, who are enthusiastic and successful. We hope to be able to rely on the support of our highest graded players for a small number of key events next year, which would make Berkshire hard to beat, even at a national level.

The majority of our squad will be eligible to play in this age group again next year, and I look forward to us building on our success this year.

We do, though, need to say good-bye to Charlie Grayson who will move up to U16/U8 next year.  Thank you for your efforts and your company Charlie – you will be missed!

Special Thanks

I owe very many thanks for the support of Chris Archer-Lock in representing Berkshire in the playing rooms, analysing players’ games, and reporting on matches, and to Jim Wadsworth for his assistance in our joint recruitment efforts, and mentoring throughout the year.

A final thank you too, for all the help and support I (and your children) have had from all you devoted parents this year.  Much appreciated, and of course, impossible to do without!

I look forward to working with you all again next year.
