Under 14 Team Event v. Hants, Bucks, and Surrey Sunday, March 12
Keith Tunstall writes:

On a bitterly cold afternoon in Berkshire four U14 teams met at Eagle House to fight it out over the chess boards.

Only Surrey managed to turn out a full team! Hants had 2/3 of a full team and Bucks were at 3/4 strength. Even Berks were missing a player, moving all the players on boards 6-12 up one board.

In a two round match Surrey took on Bucks and Hants played Berks in the first round. Both Surrey (9½) and Berks (10) had an emphatic wins over Bucks (2½) and Hants (1).

With the two winners from round one playing in the final round, a tough contest was always expected. The face off between Hants (2) and Bucks (7) was less so. With just two games left between the top teams, Berks trailed Surrey 4½-5½ and were looking to turn things round. Although we fought hard it was not to be, with Surrey running out winners by two points 5-7.

A fantastic performance, from a spirited Berkshire team with two players scoring the magical 100% - Thomas McFaul and James Holland. Also unbeaten on the day were Zach Salvini and Robert Starley.

As ever, it was a pleasure to manage a team who give it their best shot and enjoy their chess.
