31 Berkshire players competed on Day 1 of the UK Chess Challenge Southern Gigafinal at Tidworth Leisure Centre in Wiltshire. The first day of the Gigafinals covered the under 10 age groups and our results were excellent with 20 Berkshire players scoring 3 or more points. Two players qualified for the Terafinal by winning their sections with 5½ / 6: Roy Zhang and Philip Archer-Lock. In the U7 Boys section, Matthew Wadsworth tied 1st= on 5½ / 6, but lost the 10 mins per player Blitz playoff. Matthew qualifies for the TeraFinal Challengers event. As an U6 and probably the youngest player at the Gigafinal, Matthew played superbly, and will be the one to watch at next year's U7 event.
Well done to all the Berkshire players at the event for reaching the national stage of this popular competition involving 74,000 school chess players.
Another hot day at Tidworth, for the Sunday sections of the Southern Gigafinal. The "Berkshire Gazebo" played it's part in keeping everyone in the shade. However, this didn't stop the Berkshire players from shining.
Two first places, three second places and three third places mean another seven Berkshire players who have qualified to visit Sheffield at the end of August.
First and second in the under 12 section got a special mention from Mike Basman. This is a great result, since there was only one under 12 boys section, making it a really tough competition (I see that there were two sections for the under 12 boys in the Northern Gigafinal).
