Under 14 Team event: Berks, Sussex, Kent and Barnet Sunday, October 15
Keith Tunstall writes:

The Berkshire under 14 team lined up with teams from Barnet, Kent and Sussex to battle over a two round head to head. In fact the Berkshire team was actually an under 13 team...

The first round pitted Berkshire against Barnet and Sussex against Kent. With a combined grade of less than 700 Berkshire managed a creditable four points from 12 games against the much stronger (855) Barnet team. Kent (788) also struggled against Sussex (870), with Sussex taking three quarters of the points.

The final round was set for a close fought contest between each of the opposing teams. Barnet and Sussex were neck and neck all the way. As a measure of how competitive things were, the first result in this contest came in after nearly an hours play! As the match progressed the team scores were never more than a point apart until the final round:

A nail biting finish leaving Sussex the overall winners on the day. The match between Kent and Berkshire was just as much of a nail biting affair. Berkshire initially lead by three points (5½-2½), but Kent fought back to trail by one point with one game remaining. This finished with only 3 minutes remaining from the 2h 10m game, with a win for Berkshire. A 7-5 victory to finish third overall on the day.

A fantastic result for a young team with two of the youngest players, Roy Zhang and Sam Goodwin, deserving a special mention for their 100% performances. There were also two other Berkshire players unbeaten on the day. These were: James Holland and Daniel Noel, who both picked up 1½ points for the team. It was a real pleasure to see so many juniors enjoying their chess and it was an excellent performance all round from the Berkshire team.
