With roughly 30 players entering (17 from Caversham itself), it was decided to run with two sections divided at the 500 grade mark. This made both sections tough going for just about everyone right from round 1. Indeed, round 2 saw the first major upset as top seed Sam Goodwin was ambushed by local hopeful Alexis Spyrou. Alexis failed to follow up this advantage, but Sam bounced back winning the next three matches to pull himself back into contention against unbeaten Ryan Chen. Round 5 saw these two go head-to-head, Sam taking the honours, and thus leaving them both tied for first.
After wins in the final round, a blitz match was called for, but this resulted in a draw, and with time running out, Ryan and Sam were declared joint winners. This was Sam Goodwin's second trophy of the season, but a first ever for Ryan Chen.
The minor section was a similarly close-run event : going into the final round, any 7 of the 16 entrants could have won it. In the end, Peter Robinson came out as the clear winner, with an excellent 5 out of 6 for his second trophy of the season. Close behind, all tied for second place were Zimi Azubkie, Harry Holt, Joss Lazenby and Ben Ward. Three players were a further half-point behind, reflecting the very competitive nature of this section. Well done to all participants.
