Under 9 team match v. Barnet
Sunday, November 19
Jim Wadsworth and Mark Vandersluis writes:
In the first under 9 county match of the year, Berkshire’s relatively inexperienced team beat the usually strong Barnet by the extremely impressive score of 25½ to 10½ (thus reversing last year’s defeat against the same opposition). The reserve competition – unfortunately depleted as Barnet failed to field a full complement of players – was also won, by 5 points to 1 in those games actually played.
Congratulations are due to the whole team, but especially to the 11 players making their county chess debuts. Collectively they scored 23 points (including reserve matches played) out of a possible 27. A fantastic performance!
The games between the top 6 boards were mostly closely-fought affairs, with the points being shared equally between the teams; all the other boards were completely dominated by Berkshire.
A number of players both new and established scored 100%, so very well done to Matthew Wadsworth (playing on board 1 for the first time), Chloe Rogers, Alfred Wong, William Foo, Peter Robinson, Miles Deans, Ben Ward and Yusuf Hussain. George Wilks and Jonathan Smith also remained unbeaten.
All in all, a terrific start to the season. We look forward to the next match in January!
