Under 9 event: Berks, Bucks, Hants and Sussex Sunday, January 07
Jim Wadsworth writes:

In the first under 9 county match of 2007, Berkshire’s team came out on top in a match against 3 other local rivals. In the head to head matches, we beat both Buckinghamshire and Sussex, scoring 8 points out of a possible 12 on each occasion. In the final round we perhaps eased up a bit too much, allowing Hampshire to escape with a draw. This gave us a final overall total on the day of 22 points from 36, with Sussex in second with 20½ points.

In the reserve competition we came second to runaway winners Buckinghamshire.

Games of the day were probably the second round victories against Sussex of Nabeel Hussain and Chloe Rogers. In both cases the Berkshire players were behind in their games, but defended really well before turning the tables on their opponents to win. Excellent concentration in what were both very long games (so long that Chloe filled up both sides of her scoresheet!).

Not far behind these was Jonathan Matthews’ final round game against Hampshire; his win confirmed the team’s overall victory in the match. Again a very long game, highlighting the benefits of making full use of the time available on the clock.

Congratulations to the whole team; particularly to those scoring 100%, namely Matthew Wadsworth, Nabeel Hussain, Tom Vandersluis and Alfred Wong.

Many thanks to those Berkshire parents who helped with setting up, running the refreshments stall and/or clearing up afterwards. A great team spirit is building not just amongst the players but their “supporters” too! Much appreciated. Thanks also to the providers of what is a new venue for Berkshire chess, St. Piran’s School.

We look forward to the next match, against Wiltshire on January 21st!
