The annual Berkshire v Wiltshire friendly fixture saw very convincing performances and excellent results from both the Under 9 and Under 11 teams.

The Under 11 team, mindful of the close rivalry last season and narrow defeat in the corresponding fixture, showed great consistency and a some excellent play in winning this year's match by a final score of 40-8 over the three rounds. The round scores of 14-2, 14-2 and 12-4 showed that the team did not relax as the match progressed, and indeed it was heartening to see long lasting games to the end of the afternoon, which bodes well for testing matches to come over the next few months, including in the tough expanded South West zone.

Well done to the team on an impressive effort and some quality chess. Our thanks to those who helped to make the event run so smoothly, and to Polehampton Junior School for providing an excellent venue, which was commented on by the participants.

To say that Berkshire's under 9 chess team won its final friendly match of the season would be something of an understatement. In reality, we completely overwhelmed Wiltshire, winning by 43 points to 5. This compares with last year's narrow 3 point victory in the equivalent fixture. It should be highlighted that the current Wiltshire team is very inexperienced - they were only able to field one player who played in last year's match whilst we were able to call on five.

Given the massive score, it would be invidious to highlight any individual player. Suffice to say that the whole team performed brilliantly - for example it was great to see that there was no final round relaxation this time. We should take a lot of confidence from this and our previous excellent results into the EPSCA Zonal event on March 10th. Well done everyone!
