The final outing this year for the Berkshire U13 chess team was to the ECF County Championships held in Hatfield. This was a two round Jamboree between three teams: Berkshire, Essex & Hertfordshire.

After the usual team talk about not finishing too quickly the first Berkshire game was complete in under 5 minutes! However, since this was a win for Berkshire we were delighted.

Overall the average length of the Berkshire games in the first was just over 64 minutes. Nearly half the available time for each match. Just what the management asked for. The focus paid off with everyone in the entire team adding to the team total! An amazing 10½ / 12.

The team standings after the end of the first round were:

Berkshire10½
Hertfordshire7
Essex½
An excellent first round, but by no means a guaranteed win. The final round would be a tough as the first... A calming team talk about keeping the same focus in the second round, a team photo and we were all set.

The first game this round took 21 minutes and was again a win for Berkshire. Then another win, but the third game went against us. Was the match going to unravel? Not just yet. Three more wins and the finish line was in sight. A draw and a win - an hour gone. Just one more win and the match would be secured. Nearly half an hour later and the clinching result came in, giving Berkshire the trophy. The final three matches went our way, with a very cool finish by Felix on board 1 after nearly 2 hours.

Overall the game length hardly changed in this round, with each game lasting just over 1 hour on average. A mature approach from an extremely competent team.

The final result was:

Berkshire20½
Hertfordshire15
Essex½
A brilliant team effort with 100% records for half of the team: A great final team outing for retiring team manager Peter Davey. Well done everyone for a wonderful day out.
