UK Chess Challenge Southern Gigafinal
Saturday, July 07
The GigaFinal is a somewhat larger affair than the MegaFinal, so sadly we were not located within the very comfortable surroundings of the main Wellington College buildings, but were moved to a large modern sports hall within the grounds. The weather just about held up, allowing supporters to spill outside the hall. The catering left a lot to be desired with the notable exception of the cake stall on Saturday run by Berkshire's own Ben Davey and his band of fellow Peruvian explorers. Hopefully he'll want to bake the cakes for all future events!
The chess playing area was perhaps a bit crowded, but the numbers are very big, and the chess event itself mostly ran well and to schedule. However, the non-use of clocks was not universally popular, with at least one top Berkshire player losing the chance to play for the Ultimo title due to his opponent's excessively long times and resultant arbitrated draw. The use of sum-of-progressive-scores as a tie-break in events where grades are not used to determine the pairings is also incorrect.
The results for Berkshire juniors were excellent once again. Ultimo titles were won by William Foo (Under 9 Boys), Felix Ynojosa (Under 11 Boys), and James Adair (Under 14 Boys). There were 7 further qualifiers for the TeraFinal Challengers tournament. Although this number is slightly down on last year (4 firsts and 7 challengers qualifiers), it should be noted that 7 Berkshire players were within just half a point of making the podium, and that only 10 players finished on less than half points (there were 21 last year).
Best of luck to all who brave the ultimate challenge of the TeraFinal!
